Cans are put into the recycling bank. They are loaded onto a lorry, which takes them to a can reprocessing plant.
The cans are shredded with giant blades. The shreds are then cleaned in a washing machine. They are then put into a furnace for melting. The molten aluminium flows out of the furnace and is moulded into shaped blocks known as ingots or rolled into metal sheets.
The ingots are sold to aluminium manufacturers where they are rolled into sheets to be used in various aluminium products such as cans, foil and pie cases.
