"THE BOTTOM FELL OUT OF THE BOX" !!

That`s when it all started.

I was lifting a cardboard box full of empty wine bottles, ready to take to the recycle unit, when the bottom fell out of the box, sending bottles crashing to the hard cement floor of our garage. A few choice words were uttered as you can imagine! The seeds were sown right there for the need for something better to store stuff for recycling - yes, the all new WASTE RECYCLER was born!

Last year I attended a local waste roadshow and was greatly influenced with the need to do something that would be a plus for the environment. Spurred on by the roadshow, I started to investigate what we as a family did back home. The answer came back as a resounding "nothing". So, we all decided to do our bit for the environment and started to collect recycleable items and stored them in the garage instead of throwing them out in the black bin.

One day I walked into the garage and, like so many other garages, it wasn`t really a garage as such but more a storage area for the kids` bikes, the old mattress that didn`t quite get as far as the dump and the blow-up swimming pool that sprung a leak last summer. In other works a "tip"! As I looked around the
garage, one area in particular was a real mess full of newspapers, cans, bottles, plastic bags and boxes and of course everything all just lying on the floor.

This was our part in "saving the world" but it was more like chaos. What was even worse was that when I inspected our wheelie bin, it was only a half hearted attempt at recycling as the bin was still filled with more of the same recycleable material.

That finally did it. I had already saved several large plastic buckets, that with alteration, could hold large refuse bags. These were ideal so I mounted them on the back wall of the garage. What a change if only to tidy up the place. The family were impressed. However, it was only when I changed the bags to coloured ones that the idea really took off. The kids loved the vibrant colours.

I then decided how to improve on the idea and the unit you see is what resulted. A very simple idea but what a difference it makes to your bin, your garage and at the same time making your contribution to saving the earth`s resources.
